Kan Christene hulle kinders na staatskole stuur?

Aan die begin van die jaar moet Christen ouers weer besluit oor die plek waar hulle kinders onderwys gaan ontvang. In Suid-Afrika kies die meeste Christen ouers om hulle kinders na staatskole te stuur. Slegs ‘n minderheid kies vir tuisonderwys of Christelike privaatskole.

Daar word algemeen erken dat daar probleme is met staatsonderwys. Die kurrikulum is daarop gerig om die intergeloof godsdiens oor te dra. Die akademiese standaarde van staatskole laat veel te wense oor. Verder is seks, dwelms en geweld probleme in staatskole waaroor gereeld gelees word in die pers.

Christene wat hulle kinders na staatskole stuur is egter van mening dat die skool wat hulle kinders bywoon, nie ernstig geaffekteer word deur hierdie probleme nie. Hulle skool is nog ’n “goeie” skool. Dissipline word streng gehandhaaf en die skoolhoof open nog die saalperiode met Skriflesing en gebed. Mense van hulle gemeente dien in die bestuur van die skool. Baie ouers is ook van mening dat Christen kinders juis in staatskole moet wees om te “getuig” van hulle geloof.

In die VSA het daar onlangs ’n DVD verskyn oor die vraag of Christene hulle kinders na staatskole kan stuur. Die titel van die DVD is “IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America ”. Alhoewel hierdie DVD oor die situasie in die VSA gaan, is hierdie DVD ook relevant vir ouers in Suid-Afrika, aangesien die probleme wat in die VSA ondervind word presies dieselfde is as hier. Ook die redes wat Christene aanvoer om hulle keuse vir staatsonderwys te regverdig is dieselfde as wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word.
