Bouwe van der Eems and his wife Debbie have been homeschooling their five children since 2000. Bouwe is actively involved in the Association for Homeschooling and the Pestalozzi Trust and has taken part in various meeting with Department officials since 2004. With his family he has been running the SAHomeschoolers website since 2010.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) promulgated a policy on home education that attempts to monitor home learners by requiring them to be regularly assessed by competent assessors.
